Patrol Officer James Leroy Bennett, 45, was killed on April 3, 1980, during a traffic stop on US 380 about one mile east of Decatur, Texas. Bennett, a six-year veteran of the Decatur Police Department, stopped a vehicle driven by a 17-year-old who was wanted in connection with the theft of a .22 caliber rifle in a nearby town. As Bennett approached, the suspect exited with the rifle, pointed it at Bennett and ordered him to raise his hands. Bennett complied and was then shot in the throat.

The suspect fled but was quickly apprehended by other officers. He was charged with capital murder, convicted and received a life sentence. Officer Bennett is survived by his wife and son; his death had a powerful effect on the community and his fellow officers, who continue to honor his service and memory.

Did anyone who knew Officer Bennett or witnessed the case have memories or details to share that could add to the record?
