Patrol Officer Roscoe Lee, 46, of the Jacksonville Police Department in Texas, was killed on June 30, 1979, while responding to a disturbance at a pool hall at the corner of Lincoln Street and Main Street. With 13 years on the force, Officer Lee and fellow officers confronted a 21-year-old man armed with a shotgun who was pacing outside the business. Officers took cover while attempting to persuade the man to drop the weapon. Officer Lee was behind a patrol car when he rose to get a clearer view; the suspect fired a shot through the patrol car’s open windows that struck Officer Lee in the face. He was pronounced dead at the hospital shortly afterward.
The suspect was apprehended at the scene and later charged with capital murder; he was convicted and sentenced to prison. Officer Lee left a wife, Virgie Lee, and four daughters. His death was marked as a significant loss to the Jacksonville Police Department and the community he served.
Does anyone have memories of Officer Lee, his family, or the department from that time who can add context to this case?
