Walter Holt, 67, was murdered on September 21, 1990, while incarcerated at the California Correctional Institution in Tehachapi. His cellmate, Joseph Martin Danks, strangled Holt in the early hours of the morning using torn bed sheets.

Danks was already serving a life sentence for the killings of six homeless men in Los Angeles and had been nicknamed The Koreatown Slasher. He later confessed to Holt’s murder. Danks was sentenced to death in 1993 and the California Supreme Court affirmed the conviction and sentence on automatic review, noting his prior convictions for six first-degree murders and continued violent behavior in prison.
