Robert Offerman, 44, a doctor, and his partner Debra Manning, 35, a psychologist, were found shot to death in their Goleta, California home on December 30, 1979. Both victims showed signs of a struggle; broken bindings at the scene indicate they had tried to escape their attacker.
Their murders were later linked by DNA evidence to the man identified as the Golden State Killer, also known in reports as the East Area Rapist and the Original Night Stalker. That suspect was arrested many years after the killings through the use of genetic genealogy, and was charged in connection with these deaths.
The case underscores how advances in forensic methods changed the investigation of long-unsolved violent crimes. Does anyone have memories or information about the Goleta area in late 1979 that could shed light on the victims or the scene?
