On July 14, 1981, 8-month-old Jennifer Evonna Daniels of Perry, Florida, died while in the care of her babysitter, 17-year-old Christine Falling. Jennifer’s mother had briefly left her with Falling for errands; on return, Falling reported the baby was not breathing. Jennifer’s death was initially attributed to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome and not investigated further at that time.
Jennifer’s death later became part of a troubling pattern. Between 1980 and 1982 several children died while under Falling’s supervision, including Cassidy Johnson, Jeffrey Davis, Joseph Spring, and 10-week-old Travis DeWayne Coleman. After Travis Coleman’s July 2, 1982 autopsy showed internal injuries consistent with suffocation, authorities reopened the earlier cases. Falling was arrested July 22, 1982, and confessed to killing Jennifer, Cassidy and Travis, saying she smothered them and that voices had told her to kill the baby.
In December 1982 Falling pleaded guilty to three counts of first-degree murder and received life sentences with parole possible after 25 years; a 2017 parole request was denied. Jennifer Evonna Daniels was buried in Woodlawn Cemetery in Perry.
