Jeanette Margene Davis Judge, 24, was murdered on August 9, 1978, near Pagosa Springs, Colorado. She and her husband, James Judge, were on their honeymoon, just four days married, when they were abducted and killed and their van was stolen.
The abductors included escaped convict Randy Greenawalt and members of the Tison gang, who had broken out of Arizona State Prison in Florence on July 30, 1978. The gang had already committed multiple murders in Arizona before reaching Colorado. The fugitives were captured two days later, on August 11, 1978, in the Judges’ stolen van; a confrontation with law enforcement left one of Tison’s sons dead and Gary Tison later dying of exposure after escaping into the desert.
Authorities linked Greenawalt and the Tison brothers Raymond and Ricky to the Judges’ murders. Greenawalt was executed in 1997; Raymond and Ricky Tison were convicted and originally sentenced to death, but their sentences were overturned and they were resentenced to life in prison in 1992.
