I've been piecing together some local history about the awful events that happened in Farwell back in 1926, and I keep thinking about the role of the community during those times. This tragedy must have shaken the entire town to its core. I wonder how the neighbors and friends of the Hassell family processed such loss and horror. It makes me think about how communities back then dealt with trauma and supported each other without the kind of mental health resources we have now. Imagine the folks in Farwell trying to wrap their heads around such brutality, all while possibly questioning how well they knew the man responsible. It must have been a long road of healing and coming together as a community. I feel deeply for everyone who had to face those unimaginable days.

I've been digging into this case, and something that's really struck me is the sheer betrayal of trust that these children and Susie faced. Imagine being so young and trusting someone who's supposed to be a protector, only for that person to turn out to be the greatest threat. It's chilling to think how George Hassell used his familial position to orchestrate such a horrific event. I can't get past the fact that he actually tried to cover up the murders by selling their belongings. It's a haunting reminder of how some individuals can live double lives, presenting one face to the world while harboring such darkness inside. My heart goes out to the surviving family and the community that had to come to terms with such a tragedy. It's hard not to wonder how this went unrecognized for so long and what signs might have been missed.
