John Davis Jack Bryant, 80, was murdered while hiking in Pisgah National Forest on October 21, 2007. He and his wife, Irene Woods Bryant, 84, parked a maroon Ford Escape near Yellow Gap Road before setting off. Family members reported the couple missing after two weeks; searches with volunteers, cadaver dogs and a helicopter followed. John attempted to call 911 the day they disappeared but the call dropped.
On November 10, 2007, Irene’s body was found on the Barnett Branch trail; an autopsy concluded she had been bludgeoned to death with a blunt instrument and her killing was classified as a homicide. A bank card belonging to the Bryants was later used to withdraw $300 at an ATM in Ducktown, Tennessee; surveillance showed an older Caucasian man in a yellow rain jacket with his face obscured by the hood. John’s remains — a skull — were recovered on February 3, 2008, in Nantahala National Forest near a forest service road called The Switchbacks.
Who remembers seeing the Bryants or that maroon Ford Escape in late October 2007?
