Irene Bryant, 84, was murdered while hiking with her husband, John Bryant, in Pisgah National Forest on October 21, 2007. The couple had parked a maroon Ford Escape at Yellow Gap Road before heading onto the trails. Neighbors noticed newspapers piling up at the couple’s Hendersonville home, and their son Robert reported them missing after finding no sign of his parents.

On November 10, 2007, search teams found Irene’s remains concealed under leaves along the Barnett Branch trail; an autopsy determined she died of blunt force trauma to the head. John Bryant also disappeared that day; investigators later learned he had attempted a 911 call that failed to connect and that his bank card was used at an ATM in Ducktown, Tennessee for a $300 withdrawal. Surveillance captured an older Caucasian man in a yellow rain jacket, his face obscured by a hood.

A reward was offered and the FBI joined the investigation because the body was found on federal land. What details do readers remember from the trails or parking area around Yellow Gap Road that could help explain what happened that day?
