Sandford Ray Sandy Mitchell, 62, died on December 20, 2000, and was buried in Nocona Cemetery in Montague County, Texas. His death was later identified as one of ten confirmed killings linked to Nocona General Hospital, where licensed vocational nurse Vickie Dawn Jackson used mivacurium chloride, a powerful muscle relaxant, to fatally inject patients between December 2000 and February 2001.
The drug was kept on crash carts and was not a controlled substance, which allowed Jackson access without immediate suspicion. Hospital staff noted an unusual number of deaths and gossiped about them, but no action was taken until the pattern became unmistakable and authorities began investigating. Jackson was arrested and charged with multiple counts of murder, and the hospital faced litigation for failing to prevent unauthorized use of the drug.
Mitchell’s death is part of a case that exposed failures in hospital oversight and patient safety. Did anyone in the community know Sandford Mitchell or have information about his care at Nocona General Hospital?
