Linda Johnson, 28, was murdered after returning to Selma, California, from Long Beach on September 12, 1984. She visited her hospitalized mother, spent the night at the family home, and the next morning a fire had been set in three separate areas of the house using a flammable liquid. Neither Linda nor the blue Cadillac she had been driving, belonging to her boyfriend Melvin Cooper, was at the burned house.
Later that day, Linda’s seminude body was recovered from a canal outside Fresno. The autopsy documented 18 blunt force injuries to the head with multiple fractures and extensive hemorrhaging. Semen was detected on her body via prostatic acid phosphatase testing, and a black adhesive substance on her body matched the weather stripping from the trunk of Cooper’s Cadillac. The Cadillac was later found abandoned and set on fire; gasoline odor was reported at that scene.
Wilbur Lee Jennings, a 44-year-old neighbor, was arrested on September 13, 1984, after inquiries he made about Linda while she was away and comments about her late return. He was later convicted of multiple murders and received a death sentence; he was linked by DNA to other victims and died in custody in 2014. Does anyone have information about Linda’s last day in Selma or memories of the blue Cadillac?
