George Safiev, a 37-year-old man of Russian ethnicity, was one of the victims in a calculated kidnapping-for-ransom ring that operated in Southern California in late 2001 and early 2002. He and fellow victim Nick Kharabadze, 29, were lured with promises of business opportunities, abducted and held in a Sherman Oaks residence where an accomplice, Aleksejus Markovskis, was paid $15,000 to stand guard. The victims were subjected to violence and ransom demands and were murdered; their bodies were weighted and dumped in the New Melones reservoir near Yosemite National Park.

The scheme targeted affluent immigrants and generated nearly $1 million in ransom payments before an electronic transaction helped lead to arrests in February 2002. Jurijus Kadamovas and Iouri Mikhel were convicted on multiple counts including hostage-taking resulting in death and conspiracy; they received death sentences in 2007 that were later commuted to life without parole. Other accomplices received prison terms ranging from 11 years to life, and Markovskis was sentenced to 15 years for his role.

Safiev’s death was part of a pattern of targeted violence against wealthy immigrants, carried out by individuals who exploited trust for financial gain.
