Sophia Francis Garrity was an 80-year-old widow who died in a house fire on August 7, 1993, in Spring Hill, Hernando County, Florida. Her death was officially ruled accidental; the blaze destroyed her home, and she lived alone near the sister of Edwin Kaprat. Kaprat, later called The Granny Killer, became the central figure in a wave of killings and burnings of elderly women in the area, but he was never charged in Garrity’s death.
Investigators canvassed the neighborhood after Garrity’s fire and interviewed Edwin Michael Kaprat III, then a 29-year-old machinist who had recently moved in with his sister. The community responded to the broader crime spree with fear; many elderly residents changed their living arrangements. Kaprat was arrested October 8, 1993, and at one point confessed to multiple killings and assaults, though he later pleaded not guilty to the felony counts he faced. He was convicted for other murders and was killed in prison on April 19, 1995.
Garrity’s death remains a troubling part of the period of violence that terrorized Spring Hill; the official ruling was accidental, and Kaprat was not charged in her case. Did anyone living in Spring Hill in 1993 notice anything unusual near Garrity’s home around August 7?
