Sara Sally Taylor Hallett, 59, was murdered on April 21, 1973, in Aptos, California. She was a close friend of Clarnell Strandberg, the victim’s employer at the University of California, Santa Cruz, and worked there alongside her. Edmund Kemper lured Hallett to his mother’s apartment with a dinner invitation and strangled her on arrival. He then took Hallett’s car when he fled the scene.
Kemper later described a motive tied to his relationship with his mother: he reportedly believed that killing her friend as well as his mother would make his mother’s disappearance seem less suspicious, and at a 2017 parole hearing he offered an alternate account that he killed Hallett in revenge because she had backed out of a planned trip that upset his mother. After the murder Kemper fled but ultimately turned himself in; he was arrested and convicted in connection with Hallett’s death.
