Charlotte Murray Pace, 22, was murdered in her Sharlo Avenue townhouse in Baton Rouge on May 31, 2002. A recent MBA graduate from Louisiana State University, she had moved into that home just two days earlier and was alone when an intruder attacked. Her roommate found her body later that afternoon. An autopsy reported she had been sexually assaulted and stabbed more than 80 times with a screwdriver.
DNA from the scene linked Pace’s killing to at least one earlier homicide in the area, and investigators eventually identified Derrick Todd Lee, then 34, as the primary suspect after matching his DNA to evidence from Pace’s case and others. Lee was arrested in Atlanta on May 27, 2003, brought back to Louisiana, tried for first-degree murder in September 2004, and convicted on October 14, 2004; he received the death penalty. DNA evidence later tied Lee to the deaths of multiple victims.
The overlap of active perpetrators in the area has been noted, and the Pace family’s loss was part of a series of killings that terrorized Baton Rouge. Does anyone have information about Pace’s last days or about the Sharlo Avenue neighborhood at that time?
