On September 21, 2009, 46-year-old inmate Nathaniel Taylor was fatally stabbed at Franklin Correctional Institution in Carrabelle, Florida. The attack happened about 4:55 a.m.; his cellmate, 41-year-old Christopher David Lunz, used a homemade shank and declared he had a hostage when officers opened the cell doors. Lunz also took a second inmate hostage and stabbed that person; those wounds were not life-threatening. A correctional officer captain negotiated the surrender of the weapon and the release of the second inmate.

Taylor was serving a sentence related to prior convictions in Volusia County for lewd and lascivious assault on a child under 16 and coercion of a sex act on a child by an adult, and had been scheduled for release in September 2016. Lunz, who had been serving a life sentence for the 2003 murder of his father, was transferred to Florida State Prison after the incident and was found dead in his cell from an apparent suicide about 30 hours later on September 22, 2009. Lunz had claimed responsibility for other murders of people he identified as sex offenders, but those claims were not corroborated with physical evidence.

Does anyone have further information about conditions at Franklin Correctional Institution around that time or about either inmate’s custody history?
