A family visit on January 28, 2025, near Gadsden, Alabama, ended in tragedy when 72-year-old Michael McKenzie and his wife, 68-year-old Darla McKenzie, were found shot to death inside their daughter’s home. The Etowah County Sheriff’s Office responded to a 911 call from the daughter and pronounced Michael deceased at the scene. Both victims were retired attorneys from Roswell, Georgia.
Within hours, their son-in-law, 38-year-old Christopher Scott Johnson, who lived at the residence with his wife, was arrested and charged with capital murder in connection with the double homicide. He was taken into custody and held without bail. Michael McKenzie had been a Georgia Tech football player and an insurance lawyer noted for pro bono work with the Innocence Project; Darla McKenzie had been a real estate law partner at a prominent Atlanta firm. A preliminary hearing for Johnson has been held.
Did anyone know the McKenzies through travel, hiking, or their legal work and have information that could help clarify what happened that day?
