David Gay, 41, was found dead inside his Avery Drive home in Covington, Georgia, on the evening of May 13, 2025, the victim of a fatal shooting. Investigators with the Newton County Sheriff’s Office identified his 16-year-old stepson, Jayden Daniel, as the primary suspect. Daniel reportedly fled the scene in Gay’s 2016 Cadillac Escalade; the vehicle was later recovered abandoned at Denny Dobbs Park while Daniel remained at large.
Authorities treated Daniel as armed and dangerous and conducted an extended search that ended when he was located and arrested in DeKalb County on July 17, 2025, with assistance from the U.S. Marshals Service. After his capture he was booked at the Newton County Detention Center and charged with murder, aggravated assault, theft by taking, and possession of a handgun by a person under 18; bond was denied. Family accounts say the shooting followed a heated argument and that Daniel later told his mother his stepfather had hit him. The family had already endured another fatal shooting the prior year when Kennethia McKibben-Gay’s 19-year-old son, Kendarrius Spear, was killed during a robbery.
Does anyone have information about the events on Avery Drive that evening or about what led up to the argument?
