Akeela Clarke, a 19-year-old Black woman from Covington, Georgia, was killed on April 11, 2025, after a targeted burst of violence that began before dawn at the Walmart on Salem Road where she worked. Investigators say the gunman, identified as 24-year-old coworker Dwayne Eduh, returned to the store with a gun about 1:30 a.m., fatally shot coworker Khalaf Barksdale, 21, and critically wounded another employee, Ryan Bradley, before leaving.
Authorities say Eduh then drove to Clarke’s home on Emerson Trail, forced his way inside, chased Akeela and, according to her mother Samantha Clarke, shot her in front of family members as frantic 911 calls captured the scene. Clarke died at the house. Family and friends remember her as generous, caring, and determined, with plans to become a nurse; her mother told investigators Akeela did not have a romantic relationship with Eduh. The motive has not been determined.
Investigators located Eduh after he fled into South Carolina; during a standoff he shot himself and later died on April 13, 2025, so there will be no traditional trial. Does anyone in the Covington area have information about Akeela’s last shift at the Salem Road Walmart or about contacts between her and the suspect?
