On the evening of April 21, 2025, 17-year-old Julio Lio Dayne Matamoros was shot in the chest outside Noble Wine & Spirits on South Western Avenue in Marion. He was taken to a local hospital and then transferred to Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne, where he died the next evening. Julio was a Mississinewa High School senior, a baseball player recently accepted to Indiana Wesleyan University, and remembered for his love of family, friends, and sports.
Court documents and witness statements say the encounter began as a transaction for marijuana vape cartridges. Julio had arranged to meet 18-year-old Cordel Bice; an argument reportedly followed and Bice allegedly demanded the cartridges and shot Julio. Julio identified his assailant to police before he died. Investigators traced a white Pontiac seen fleeing the scene to an apartment complex, located a residence on South Miller Avenue, and arrested Bice there without incident. A witness later led police to the firearm, recovered from a trash can near 11th and Boots Street. Bice was charged with two counts of murder, robbery resulting in serious bodily injury, and theft, and is being held without bond awaiting trial.
Vigils and memorials have been held in Marion, and counseling was provided to students and staff at Mississinewa High School. Does anyone have information about Julio, the transaction that night, or what they saw in that area after April 21?
