Carl Phillip Marder-Grant, 31, was killed by gunfire on April 23, 2025, near Victoria Avenue and 17th Street in North Chicago. Born February 25, 1994, he grew up in Belize and moved to Waukegan, Illinois, at 14. He is remembered for his warm personality, love of the outdoors, and passion for music.

Authorities describe the shooting as a gang-related attack. The Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office approved a charge of first-degree murder against a suspect named Marchan, who was scheduled for an initial court appearance. A funeral service was held April 27, 2025, at Bradshaw & Range Funeral Home in Waukegan.

Carl is survived by his mother Bernadine Jenson, stepmother Virginia, his wife Niurka, daughter Leilani, and brothers Scotty, Gerald, and Patrick. Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to come forward.
