On the morning of March 1, 2025, police found two women shot to death inside a ground-floor unit at Village Square Apartments in Lafayette, Indiana. The victims were 34-year-old Laportia Shenett and 28-year-old Kadeisha Ross. The Tippecanoe County Coroner’s Office ruled Shenett’s death due to multiple gunshot wounds; Ross died of a single fatal gunshot wound. Investigators described the attack as targeted rather than random.
Authorities focused on 50-year-old Seyene Vargas, who had a prior domestic relationship with Shenett. Investigators say Vargas texted Shenett on the evening of February 28 asking Ross to leave, then allegedly borrowed a handgun and a vehicle. Surveillance reportedly showed a vehicle matching the one Vargas borrowed arriving and leaving the complex in a narrow timeframe. Vargas was later located in Seattle on March 16 and arrested; parts of a disassembled handgun recovered from locations in Gary were reported to be a probable ballistic match to the weapon used.
What information might help clarify the timeline between the February 28 messages and the discovery on March 1?
