John Tennent, 30, died after a gunshot wound to his back in the early hours of January 25, 2025, at the Broadway Lofts Apartments on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in downtown Macon. Emergency responders took him to Atrium Health Navicent, where he was pronounced dead at about 3:15 a.m. The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office initially described the shooting as accidental.

A grand jury later returned an indictment against Ethan Nathaniel Cox of Milledgeville, charging him with involuntary manslaughter and reckless conduct. The indictment alleges Cox was dancing with a loaded firearm when it discharged, fatally wounding Tennent, and says Cox had previously told deputies Tennent had handed him the gun just before it went off. The indictment emphasizes Cox’s alleged conscious disregard of a significant risk to Tennent’s safety.

The case is now in the judicial system. Does anyone have information about Tennent’s time at the Broadway Lofts or about the events that night?
