Richard Agpawa, 41, of Oakley, California, was fatally shot shortly before his car crashed into the center divide on Interstate 280 north of De Anza Boulevard in Cupertino on January 13, 2025, just before 10 p.m. Initial callers told dispatch the crash might have followed a road rage incident or a high-speed race, and witnesses reported seeing two vehicles speeding, but investigators have not confirmed either scenario.

CHP officers found Agpawa with severe injuries and he was taken to Stanford Hospital, where the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner’s Office ruled the death a homicide after a gunshot wound to the head was discovered. Authorities believe the shooting occurred shortly before the collision. The CHP says it has not identified a suspect or established a motive and is urging anyone with information to contact its investigative tip line. A fundraiser was started to assist Agpawa’s family; he was reportedly on his way to work when the incident occurred.

If anyone witnessed the vehicles on I-280 that night or has dashcam or other footage, please contact the CHP investigative tip line.
