Leobardo Diaz, 28, was found fatally shot inside a vehicle on the evening of January 26, 2025, in the 1900 block of West Greenwood Avenue in Waukegan, Illinois. Officers responding to reports of a shooting discovered Diaz with a gunshot wound; he was taken to a hospital and later pronounced dead. The Lake County Coroner’s Office confirmed his identity and an autopsy determined he died from a gunshot wound to the back.

Investigators say another man who had been in the vehicle, 31-year-old Fredi Aquilar Carrasco, was found dead a few blocks away in the 1700 block of West Greenwood Avenue, suffering a fatal gunshot wound to the head. Reports state Aquilar Carrasco had been in the car with Diaz and that witnesses said the group had been driving around looking for cocaine when Aquilar Carrasco unexpectedly fired a shot into the front driver’s seat, striking Diaz. There was said to be no prior argument or confrontation; authorities described the shooting as possibly accidental. Two other passengers were questioned and released. No additional suspects have been identified.
