In the early morning hours of December 28, 2024, 37-year-old Dmytro Serbeniuk of Des Plaines, Illinois, was found shot and pronounced dead at the Pilot Travel Center on Pembroke Oak Grove Road in Oak Grove, Kentucky. Officers and deputies performed life-saving CPR at the scene, but the Christian County Coroner pronounced Serbeniuk dead there.

Investigators say the shooting occurred during what appeared to be an attempted violent robbery aimed at stealing Serbeniuk’s box truck. A witness chased the truck as it fled but lost sight of it in Tennessee. The suspect’s rental van was left behind in the gas station parking lot, and the stolen box truck was later recovered abandoned on the side of Interstate 24 in Humphreys County, Tennessee, with no driver present.

On January 6, 2025, 36-year-old Brian Lee Kerr Jr. was arrested in Illinois after an Illinois State Police pursuit; he was wanted on Tennessee charges including theft over $10,000 and being a felon in possession of a firearm and has been identified as a possible suspect in Serbeniuk’s shooting, though he had not been formally charged in the murder at that time. Anyone who witnessed the shooting, the chase, or saw the stolen truck or the rental van is urged to share information.
