Late on December 30, 2024, 24-year-old Nikhl Israni was shot multiple times while sitting in his car near the intersection of Middlesex and Maude Streets in Lowell, Massachusetts. He was taken to Lowell General Hospital and pronounced deceased. Responding officers found reports of a person in the roadway shortly before 8:00 p.m., and the preliminary timeline places the shooting at that scene.

Police say Israni was in the vehicle with another man when the shooting occurred. Authorities identified 20-year-old Bravindah Mawanda of Lowell as the person who allegedly fired the fatal shots, and investigators located a firearm at Mawanda’s home that they say is consistent with the wounds Israni suffered. Mawanda was arrested and faced charges; the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office, Lowell Police and Massachusetts State Police detectives are handling the investigation.
