In the late afternoon of February 12, 2025, 39-year-old Jamaal Roberts, a Black man originally from Rocky Mount, North Carolina, was found in the foyer of an apartment building in the 200 block of West Franklin Street in Hagerstown, Maryland, suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. Paramedics responded but Roberts was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities identified 28-year-old Kevin Wilfred Huling, a Hagerstown West End resident, as a suspect and located him hiding inside a closet at a home on Wakefield Road, less than a mile from the shooting. Huling was taken into custody and charged with first-degree murder, second-degree murder, first-degree assault and multiple firearm offenses. He was held without bail at the Washington County Detention Center. Court records show Huling had a prior conviction for possession with intent to distribute.
Investigators recovered two live 9mm cartridges and an expended cartridge, and used surveillance footage and witness accounts to track Huling’s movements after he fled the apartment. Authorities described the shooting as an isolated event and said there was no ongoing threat to the public. If anyone has information about Jamaal Roberts or the events that led to his death, please share what you know.
