Kendrick Lewis, 24, was shot and killed in Opelousas, Louisiana, on December 28, 2024, after stepping outside to try to mediate a dispute. The confrontation began when a group of women arrived to confront guests at a neighboring home; Lewis, who was visiting his mother, went outside to ask them to leave and was struck when gunfire erupted. Deputies found him receiving CPR on Honey Lane; he was airlifted to a local hospital and later died of his injuries.
The St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office’s investigation identified several suspects. Authorities named Marques Sonnier, 18, as the suspected gunman. Also implicated were Joshua Ladarin Savoy Lastrapes, 39; Jasana Crystalin Amir Broussard, 17; and two juvenile brothers, 16-year-old Drake Pickney, Jr., and 15-year-old Drakelyn Pickney. Within weeks all five were in custody. Sonnier and Drake Pickney, Jr. face second-degree murder, illegal use of weapons, and aggravated criminal damage to property counts; Lastrapes, Broussard, and Drakelyn Pickney face charges including accessory after the fact to second-degree murder and inciting a felony. Investigators say they have physical evidence linking the initial trio to the attack; no official motive has been released.
