On the night of April 22, 2025, shots were reported near Walker Street and Kemble Street in Utica shortly before midnight. A shot spotter alert brought officers to the area around 11:30 p.m., and they observed a car speeding away. Inside that vehicle was 33-year-old Utica resident Omar Mitchell, who had been struck by gunfire. He was taken to Wynn Hospital but later died of his injuries.
The Utica Police Department’s Major Crimes Unit led the initial investigation, processing multiple locations connected to the incident and interviewing potential witnesses, including the two other people who rode in the vehicle that transported Mitchell to the hospital. For a time no suspects were publicly identified as investigators worked to determine what happened.
Did anyone in the Walker Street or Kemble Street area that night see the vehicle or the events leading up to the shooting?
