Two-year-old Armani Turnipseed died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound while visiting his father at a residence on Louisville Street in Starkville, Mississippi. Emergency responders transported the child to Blair E. Batson Hospital for Children in Jackson, where Armani succumbed to his injuries. The Oktibbeha County Coroner confirmed the cause of death, ordered an autopsy, and described the death as appearing accidental.

Starkville police say the firearm belonged to the child’s father, Nigel Cheatham, and was left in a place accessible to Armani. Cheatham was arrested and charged with felony child deprivation of necessities with substantial harm; he was booked into the Oktibbeha County Jail and later released. The District Attorney for the 16th Circuit said a grand jury would review the facts to consider additional charges.

If anyone was at the Louisville Street residence that day or has information about how the firearm was stored, please share what you know.
