Isaiah Caldwell, 24, was fatally shot during an on-campus incident at Elizabeth City State University in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, on April 27, 2025. The shooting happened about 12:30 a.m. shortly after students had gathered for the annual Viking Fest Yard Fest in the quad. Caldwell was visiting the university and was not an ECSU student.

Three ECSU students sustained gunshot wounds and two other people were hurt during the chaos; those injured were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Multiple agencies — ECSU Police, Elizabeth City Police, the Pasquotank County Sheriff’s Office, the Camden County Sheriff’s Office and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation — opened a joint investigation. Investigators have identified persons of interest who are not believed to be ECSU students, but no suspects have been named and no arrests announced.

The university tightened security, limited access to parts of campus and is offering counseling to students. Does anyone who attended Viking Fest or was nearby that night have information that could help investigators?
