Matthew Alexander Flemming, 67, was fatally shot on the evening of April 16, 2025, while helping his aunt with yard work in the 800 block of Congaree Church Road in Lower Richland County, near Gadsden, South Carolina. The dispute reportedly began over a stolen lottery ticket and escalated after a trip to a store; witnesses say Paul Williams, 60, who had been assisting earlier, became loud and was asked to leave the property. Shortly after, Flemming called to his aunt and a single gunshot was heard.
Richland County deputies responded to a call about the dispute and, upon arrival, heard the shot. They saw Williams exiting the backyard with a gun and detained him. Flemming was found with a gunshot wound to his upper body, taken to a hospital, and pronounced dead. Williams has been arrested and charged in connection with the shooting; he remains in custody.
Does anyone in the area have information about the dispute over the lottery ticket or the events that evening?
