Mario Lamond ’Chewy’ Carson, 42, was fatally shot on February 9, 2025, outside the Dollar General on Bat Cave Road in Old Fort. The shooting occurred about 2:30 p.m. after a domestic dispute between Carson and his daughter’s boyfriend escalated; two gunshots were fired and Carson died at the scene.
Police identified 22-year-old Jacob Daniel Stewart of McDowell County as the sole suspect. He was arrested at the scene and charged with second-degree murder. The Old Fort Police Department is working with the McDowell County Sheriff’s Office and the State Bureau of Investigation on the case.
Carson was described as having a vibrant personality, a love for music and gaming, a devoted father to three children, and the owner of a dog named Cerberus. His death was reported as the first homicide in Old Fort in over a decade.
