On February 14, 2025, 24-year-old Jaquante Taymont Montgomery of Sumter, South Carolina, was shot multiple times inside the Walmart on Broad Street and later died at Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital. An autopsy was scheduled at the Medical University of South Carolina to determine the precise cause of death. The shooting caused a large law enforcement and emergency response and led to the store’s evacuation.
Sumter police say the shooting grew out of a recent dispute between Montgomery and another man. Authorities identified 19-year-old Chanceler Lowery as the suspect; Lowery was taken into custody hours after the shooting after his parents were reportedly involved in turning him in. He was charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime and was denied bond at his initial court appearance. Police are also seeking another person who may be connected to the case.
Montgomery, born September 13, 2000, was a Sumter public school alumnus, a father of three and worked as a poultry processor. If anyone was in the Walmart that afternoon or knew Montgomery or the nature of his dispute with Lowery, please come forward with information.
