On January 30, 2025, Heather Ann Barela, a 44-year-old woman, was fatally shot inside her home in Santa Clara, Utah. Officers responded around 11 p.m. to reports of gunshots near Santa Clara View Drive and Circle Drive and found Heather deceased at the scene. A 20-year-old family member, Brandon Alfred Barela, also sustained gunshot wounds that were described as not life-threatening.

Initially treated as a possible home invasion, the investigation quickly shifted after officers questioned people at the residence. Investigators dismissed the theory of an unknown assailant and arrested a minor family member. Heather’s 15-year-old adopted son was later charged in 5th District Juvenile Court with murder, aggravated assault, and five counts of shooting a gun and causing injury.
