A neighbor dispute over noise ended in a fatal shooting in Clarkston on January 28, 2025. Fifty-three-year-old Chad Vanscotter was shot and killed in the 1200 block of Ash Street; authorities say 76-year-old neighbor David E. Boyd went to Vanscotter’s apartment to confront him about loud music.

Boyd called 911 at 8:59 p.m., reported the shooting and was taken into custody without incident. Investigators found a handwritten note in Boyd’s apartment expressing that he intended to kill Vanscotter and then himself; Boyd later said he had written the note earlier that day. Boyd made an initial appearance in Asotin County Superior Court and was set to be arraigned on first-degree murder charges.

Vanscotter was a Clarkston High School graduate who worked in the local food service industry for 24 years until health problems ended his career in 2014. He is survived by his wife Michelle, his mother and his sister. If anyone knew Chad, his routines, or the dispute between these neighbors, does the community have information to share?
