A routine traffic stop in Virginia Beach turned deadly on the night of February 21, 2025. Officer Cameron Girvin, 25, and his partner stopped a vehicle for an expired license plate. The driver, identified as 42-year-old John McCoy III, at first refused to exit and then got into a physical struggle with the officers. During the altercation McCoy produced a handgun and shot both officers multiple times, then fired additional shots at each while they were on the ground. Both officers were taken to hospitals and later died of their wounds.

A manhunt located McCoy in a nearby shed, where he was found with what authorities believe was a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Investigators reported McCoy had a prior felony conviction from 2009. Another person was in the stopped vehicle but was not expected to face charges. Girvin had served with the Virginia Beach Police Department for five years and is survived by his expectant wife and his parents.

Did anyone in the Virginia Beach area witness that traffic stop or have information about the occupants of the vehicle?
