On the evening of December 20, 2011, 53-year-old James Patrick McGillivray was fatally stabbed in Placentia, California. The attack happened about 8:15 p.m. in a shopping center on the 100 block of North Bradford Avenue. Surveillance footage from a nearby business shows an assailant who appeared to wait before launching an unprovoked assault. McGillivray’s body was found the next day near the mall.

McGillivray, who was homeless and had lived in the Placentia area for many years, was not known for getting into confrontations, according to authorities. The suspect was described as a thin male, about 18 to 25 years old, 5 feet 6 inches to 5 feet 9 inches tall, and dressed all in black.
