Opal Margaret Peggy Holder Lowe was a 42-year-old savings-and-loan officer working at the Unifirst Federal Savings and Loan branch in the Metrocenter shopping area of Jackson, Mississippi, when she was abducted during an armed robbery on the morning of September 17, 1981. Marion Albert Pruett entered the branch, announced a holdup, and later forced Peggy into a car as a hostage. He drove roughly a hundred miles east, crossed into Alabama, and led her deep into woods in Sumter County.
According to Pruett’s later testimony, he ordered Peggy to kneel on the forest floor and then shot her once in the back of the head. Her body was found on October 27, 1981, at a location Pruett directed searchers to; an autopsy listed the gunshot wound as the cause of death. A Hinds County grand jury indicted Pruett for capital murder; he was convicted under Mississippi’s felony-murder statute after testifying about the abduction, interstate drive, and killing. Jurors returned a death sentence at the penalty phase.
Does anyone have memories of Peggy’s life in Jackson, or information about her final hours that could add detail to this case?
