On April 22, 1984, 14-year-old Leslie Shelley of Griswold, Connecticut, was abducted while walking home from the movies with her friend, 14-year-old April Brunais. The girls were taken by Michael Bruce Ross, driven to Beach Pond in Rhode Island, bound, and assaulted. Both Shelley and Brunais were strangled; Ross later concealed their bodies in his car trunk and left them in a culvert in Preston, Connecticut.

Witness descriptions from a separate June 1984 abduction helped identify Ross as a suspect. He later confessed to the murders of eight young women, including Shelley and Brunais. Ross was convicted for the murders of Shelley, Brunais and two others on June 26, 1987, and was sentenced to death. Leslie’s parents were Edwin and Lera Shelley.
