Roberta Robin Ray Armtrout, 24, of Linden, California, was found murdered on September 8, 1985, in Potter’s Creek just outside Linden in San Joaquin County. She had last been seen on September 4, 1985, getting into a red truck with two unidentified men near her mother’s home in east Stockton; one of the men was described as tall and thin.

Her body showed extreme violence: she had been raped and stabbed 46 times and left face down. Obscenities had been carved into her lower abdomen and wrist—marks that helped confirm her identity. Family members remembered her as generous and troubled.

Investigators later linked Robin’s killing to Loren Herzog and Wesley Shermantine, two childhood friends implicated in a string of methamphetamine-fueled murders in Central California. Herzog told investigators Shermantine owned the red truck and had killed Robin, but his account lacked enough detail to charge Shermantine in this case. Herzog was charged with Robin’s murder among others; Herzog later died by suicide in 2012. Shermantine was convicted in 2001 of four murders and sentenced to death.

Does anyone have memories of Robin from Linden or Stockton, or information about the red truck seen on September 4, 1985?
