Sam Parchuk was an 84-year-old longshoreman and lifelong bachelor who lived alone in San Francisco’s Excelsior District. In February 1992 he let a drifter named David Silva sleep on a cot in his garage; Silva, reportedly high on crack cocaine, then beat Parchuk with that same cot, stole cash and a wrist-watch, and fled on a bicycle. Parchuk survived the initial assault but was hospitalized with serious head injuries and declined over the following six months.

When Parchuk died in a Daly City hospital in August 1992 the San Mateo County medical examiner listed arteriosclerosis as the cause and the death was classified as natural; contemporaneous records treated the earlier incident as elder abuse rather than a homicide or robbery. The case was reopened after 2003 when Silva, by then a convicted rapist and murderer, gave statements linking himself to multiple elderly victims including Parchuk. No separate homicide charge has been filed for Parchuk, and Silva’s confessions are the primary evidence connecting him to the fatal beating.

Does anyone have memories of Sam Parchuk, or information about the 1992 assault or the hospital course that followed?
