James A. Severson was 42 when he was killed inside his downtown Eau Claire apartment on May 21, 1986. Investigators described a violent assault involving both a beating and repeated stabbing; Severson died in the apartment after the attackers overpowered and stabbed him.
A neighbor, traveling nightclub singer Alvin Taylor, was later linked to Severson’s death. Taylor made statements describing stabbing Severson in the neck, a struggle in which a blade broke, choking him, then obtaining a butcher knife and repeatedly stabbing him. Taylor was arrested in April 1987 as authorities connected him to a series of killings in western Wisconsin, and he ultimately admitted responsibility for Severson’s death.
A confession Taylor gave to investigators was ruled inadmissible at trial because questioning continued after statements that could reasonably be read as invoking the right to remain silent. Taylor was found not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect; the court determined he had committed the acts but ordered his commitment to Mendota Mental Health Institute rather than a criminal conviction. Does anyone have memories of Severson or information about his life in Eau Claire that could add context to his story?
