Elizabeth Maxine Gandy was 34 when her partially clothed body was found on April 19, 1993, inside an abandoned pool hall at Stratford Avenue and Fifth Street in Bridgeport, Connecticut. Blood spatter on the walls and unfastened pants indicated a violent, sexual assault; a piece of wood found near her body was believed to have been the weapon. DNA from beneath her fingernails—evidence of a struggle—was later entered into the national database by investigators working cold cases.

That DNA matched Emanuel Lovell Webb, a former Bridgeport security guard who had moved to Georgia in August 1993 and later had DNA put into the system after a parole violation. The same DNA linked Webb to three other African American women killed in Bridgeport—Sharon Cunningham, Minnie Sutton, and Sheila Etheridge; all four victims had been strangled. Webb was extradited to Connecticut in 2007 and pleaded no contest to the murders of Gandy, Cunningham, and Sutton; charges in Etheridge’s death were dropped under the plea agreement.

Are there details about Gandy’s life or about the building on Stratford Avenue and Fifth Street that anyone remembers and can share with the discussion?
