On the evening of Thursday, May 14, 1981, Reverend John Jay Jackson, a 35-year-old priest at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Jackson, Tennessee, was last seen leaving a family dinner between 8:00 and 8:10 p.m., a three-minute walk from the rectory. The medical examiner concluded he was likely killed that night between about 8:00 and 8:30 p.m. His body was found the next morning, Friday, May 15, inside the rectory with a fatal gunshot wound to the back of his right shoulder and a non-fatal wound to his left shoulder.
The rectory showed signs of a struggle: a shattered sliding glass door, scattered papers, an overturned potted plant, ransacked bedroom drawers and coins strewn on the floor with the victim’s pockets turned out. Investigation attention turned to Laron Ronald Williams, a fugitive who had escaped prison and, after additional killings, burglarized St. Mary’s and was arrested days later. Williams was prosecuted, convicted of first-degree murder and burglary in Father Jackson’s death, and sentenced to death.
What details do readers recall about Father Jackson, the rectory, or that week in Jackson that might help fill in the timeline?
