Mark Alan Marsh was 19 and a U.S. Marine lance corporal when his remains were found on February 18, 1980, off the Templin Highway near Interstate 5 in Castaic, a remote stretch of northern Los Angeles County. The scene was brutal: Marsh’s body was discovered decapitated and his hands had been severed after death. He was later interred at Houston National Cemetery in Texas.

Reports place Marsh’s last known movements along Southern California freeways. He had last been seen hitchhiking toward Buena Park from near his Marine posting at El Toro. Some accounts allege additional sexual assault, including sodomy with a large object. Investigators and later chroniclers linked this killing to Randy Steven Kraft, the so-called Scorecard Killer, whose known victims were often young men, many Marines, found near freeways.

Marsh’s death appears on victim lists associated with Kraft’s series, though it was not among the 16 murders for which Kraft was tried. Does anyone have information about Marsh’s last day, his movements near El Toro, or contacts who might shed light on what happened?
