John Lucas, 51, was working as a Lyft driver on the morning of September 22, 2025, when a routine trip from Tempe to nearby Guadalupe ended in violence. According to authorities, Lucas picked up two passengers — a man and a woman — who had reportedly been awake for days and using methamphetamine. As they neared Guadalupe, the male passenger allegedly shot Lucas multiple times; deputies found him unresponsive in the driver’s seat and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The male passenger was identified as 29-year-old Angel Lopez. Lopez was located in Guadalupe the next day after fleeing into a residence; following a standoff with tactical units he surrendered and was taken into custody. He was booked on charges of first-degree homicide and armed robbery with bond set at $1 million. Family and friends described Lucas as a beloved dog lover and avid tennis player with a larger-than-life personality; he was also a founding member of a nonprofit social group in Delaware.
The investigation into Lucas’s death remains ongoing. If anyone has information about the trip or the passengers that morning, please come forward.
