Mateo Renato Banegas was 18 when he was shot multiple times on the afternoon of July 22, 2025, near Wilton Boulevard and Stonebridge Boulevard in the Wilton community of New Castle, Delaware. New Castle County Division of Police officers found him about 3:58 p.m., attempted life-saving measures, and he was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead. Police asked residents to expect road closures and an increased presence as detectives began investigating the scene near a housing complex behind a Walmart.
In the weeks after the killing detectives identified multiple suspects. Two juveniles, a 16-year-old from Bear and a 17-year-old from New Castle, were arrested and charged with first-degree murder and related offenses; each also faced firearms charges, and the 17-year-old faced an additional charge of possession of a firearm by a person prohibited. Warrants were issued for a third suspect, 19-year-old Mehki Wilson of Elkton, Maryland, who remained at large; the county fugitive team and the FBI’s Delaware Violent Crime and Safe Streets Task Force were reported to be involved and rewards were offered for information leading to his arrest.
