Thirteen-year-old Saith Toledo Mendez was killed late on August 23, 2025, while waiting for his mother at the 76 gas station in the 8800 block of Whittier Boulevard in Pico Rivera. Investigators say a tan four-door sedan pulled up shortly before midnight; the driver spoke briefly at the service window while a passenger, later identified as 20-year-old Andres Adan Chavez, stood near the pumps. As Saith stepped outside after visiting his mother, detectives report the passenger approached and, without provocation, shot the boy in the back at close range, then fired additional rounds before fleeing into a nearby neighborhood. First responders pronounced Saith dead at the scene. Neighbors and relatives described him as a shy, curious kid who accompanied his mother on overnight shifts after his father’s recent death.
Deputies detained the driver and a female passenger at the scene for questioning but released them pending further inquiry. On August 28, Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna named Andres Adan Chavez as the person believed responsible and warned he should be considered armed and dangerous; Chavez was arrested on the evening of August 29 in the 9500 block of Whittier Boulevard and booked on suspicion of murder with bail set at $2 million. Prosecutors charged him with murder and special firearm allegations; the case was to be presented at the Downey Courthouse.
Did anyone in Pico Rivera see the tan sedan or have information about that night near Whittier Boulevard that could help investigators?
